OPAL-RT Launches eHS Gen3, the New Generation of Real-Time Power Electronics Simulation Toolbox

OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES launched today its third-generation real-time power electronics simulation toolbox. eHS Gen3, a performance-driven update designed to bring even more power and accuracy to FPGA simulation scenarios while simultaneously improving ease-of-use and system compatibility.

eHS Gen3 facilitates the use of FPGA for high-fidelity Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulation with sub-microsecond time steps by avoiding the difficulties associated with the coding of FPGA devices. Like the original eHS and its second-generation upgrade, eHS Gen3 employs an easy-to-use circuit editor to greatly increase the speed of design cycles involving FPGA simulation. It requires no mathematical modeling, VHDL programming, or FPGA experience on the part of the user, who can go from circuit modeling to FPGA in a matter of seconds. The third-generation model makes an astounding leap forward in speed and precision for even faster and better results, and combines usability enhancements and wider system compatibility to broaden the appeal for both existing eHS users and new ones. “OPAL-RT customers set high standards for the product line, so its users will be amazed by the performance eHS Gen3 brings to their design work.” Says Christophe Brayet, Product Director, “ It shatters all previous records for computation speed and accuracy on FPGA and uses a new FPGA core architecture and a new Java-based control generation engine for increased system compatibility. “ eHS Gen3 brings a whole new level of performance to the eHS line. The upgrade includes: optimized initialization to eliminate parasitic oscillations and losses; automatic optimization of the Gs factor; eHS offers to the user a maximum of 32 inputs, 32 outputs, 72 switches, 150 L/C states without decoupling, as well as decreased latency for two-level inverters and for three-level NPC inverters (260 ns). Additionally, eHS Gen3 requires no decoupling, which eliminates decoupling delays. The updates are bringing the most powerful and accurate power electronics toolbox in the real-time simulation industry. Faster tools, better connectivity, an almost tenfold increase in the number of scenarios that can be modeled, and a new algorithm to remove switch model losses (Loss Compensation Algorithm) establish eHS Gen3 as a “must have” upgrade. It loosens the limitations that previously confined FPGA to small system simulation. eHS Gen3 is ideal for a variety of industrial design applications, including the growing fields of electric motor drives, car charging stations, wind turbine converters, solar power inverters, and microgrid networks. Furthermore, eHS Gen3 is compatible with the most powerful OPAL-RT real-time simulators such as the OP4500, OP5600,OP7000 families. Software compatibility has been expanded to include the last versions of MATLAB; and compatible with standard model editor interfaces such as SimPowerSystems™; PSIM™; and Plecs™.
