OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES Closes Year with Sale of Record-breaking HYPERSIM Real-Time Digital Simulator

OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES reports that the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) of Pakistan has signed a deal to acquire OPAL-RT’s HYPERSIM real-time digital simulator for large scale power systems. The sale, worth more than $1.5 million USD, represents an extremely cost-effective solution for NTDC, considering the enormous power of the HYPERSIM simulator.

HYPERSIM, part of the ePOWERgrid product family, is capable of simulating and analyzing very large-scale power systems, with the goal of aiding and enhancing system planning, reliability, and protection for future electric network design. The NTDC installation will be able to simulate up to 1500 three-phase buses at a 50-microsecond time-step in real time, far more than any competing product. This will enable NTDC to simulate operational models with DC integrated into its AC transmission systems, and to incorporate renewable energy generation facilities into their design. It will also help improve AC system operation, test system reliability, and improve system protection. “This NTDC installation will be the biggest simulator of its kind in the Indian sub-continent region,” said Pierre-François Allaire, OPAL-RT Sales and Marketing Director. “We expect other utilities in the region to sit-up and take notice. HYPERSIM will be a boon for NTDC and to other utilities handling grid sizes of thousands of buses.” NTDC is challenged with the need to expand its power system while maintaining a diverse portfolio of operational components from across several generations of technologies and configurations. HYPERSIM, used on a daily basis by Hydro-Quebec and developed by IREQ in collaboration with OPAL-RT, is capable of simulating this mixed environment and of running virtual tests of different configurations and designs to determine the best way to grow the network. It will enhance NTDC’s capacity in the crucial areas of system planning, design, reliability, and protection for future electric network design. “It’s not just about making the existing system better,” said Jean Bélanger, CEO and CTO of OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES. “We see a growing need to incorporate alternative and renewable energy systems into power grids around the world. We are proud to be a part of the international effort to move large scale power systems in this direction safely and efficiently.” OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES offers the most complete, open, and high-performance real-time power system simulation solutions on the market. They cover every need for traditional power grid simulations, and offer an unsurpassed level of scalability to design, simulate, and test complex power systems, thanks to their unprecedented level of product integration. The capability of ePOWERgrid products to simulate everything from fast electromagnetic phenomenon to the transient stability of large power systems, allows power system engineers and scientists to optimize the security, efficiency, and performance of microgrid, renewable energy sources, and large interconnected power grids.   ABOUT NTDC National Transmission & Despatch Company (NTDC) Limited is a division of the Ministry of Water and Power, Pakistan. It has been in commercial operation since 1998, operating and maintaining twelve 500 KV and twenty nine 220 KV Grid Stations, 5077 km of 500 KV transmission line and 7359 km of 220 KV transmission line in Pakistan.
