Presentation: Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation to Test Complex Controls and Fast Switching Converters
The development of today’s power electronics applications involves ever more complex topologies and more demanding controls. This is fuelled by faster switching power semiconductors (SiC and GaN technology) with the aim to improve efficiency and reduce harmonics. Hence testing these control strategies is getting more and more complex.
This presentation focuses on Rapid Control Prototyping and Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation as powerful and cost-effective tools to verify and test these complex power electronics controls – even in parallel to their development. To do so, simulation models need to be run on FPGAs to assure the real-time capability for fast switching devices. OPAL-RT’s solvers allow electrical engineers with no knowledge of FPGA programming to run power electronic simulations with large numbers of switches in real-time.
The presentation is supported by various application examples and reference cases – ranging from simple 2-level, 3-phase inverters switching at 50kHz and simulated at 200ns to multilevel converters of hundreds of levels – also simulated at 500ns and below.
