Voltage Control of Power Grids Using Wide-Area Measurements and Model Predictive Control (MPC)

This demo presents a controller-in-the-loop real-time simulation for power grids. It shows the application of ePHASORSIM as the backbone simulator for test and validation of a wide area control algorithm. A model predictive control (MPC) based algorithm is designed to coordinate the operation point of reactive power devices in the grid (such as excitation systems and capacitor banks) to maintain the voltage deviation at certain buses within a threshold during disturbances. The controller inputs are the voltage of pilot buses of power grid. On a real-time target, ePHASORSIM simulates the power grid and gets the new settings from the controller to adjust the reference voltage of excitation systems and operation point of reactive compensators.
