Comparison of Induction Motor Startup with Different Rotor Designs (Available in Hypersim)

No-load startup of a 50HP (37.3 kVa) Induction Motor

Effect of single-cage, double-cage and wound-rotor motor design types.

1-squirrel-cage rotor type:

Typical low cost industrial motor.
A second breaker is mechanically interlocked
to prevent the induction motor to run on a floating bus.
it has no effect on simulation as it is kept open during startup.

2-squirrel-cage rotor type

Industrial motor with improved
torque-speed characterstics.
Also includes deep-bar rotor.

Wound-rotor type:

Startup resistors are inserted in
the rotor to reduce startup currents
Rotor access is also used for
variable-speed wind turbine generator.
