Can ePHASORsim be used for HIL? How to do it?

Indeed users of OPAL-RT simulators can perform Hardware In the Loop (HIL) with ePHASORsim, there are however important remarks:

1) Please bear in mind that the ePHASORsim tool from RT-LAB produces phasor data (magnitude and phase values). Typically when you do HIL, you want to be able to generate time varying waveforms (for example instantaneous three phase voltages and currents ) that you send to an external controller or device. If that is the case, then you would need to convert the phasor values from ePHASORsim to three phase time varying signals: such conversion is not difficult at all  with matlab/RT-LAB. Customer can find an ePHASORsim model that makes the conversion from a single pashor value (voltage and magnitude) to 3-phase sinusoidal time varying signals. Model can be found in the ePHASORsim example folder from RT-LAB installer at:

C:\OPAL-RT\RT-LAB\v11.X.X.XX\Examples\ePHASORsim\phasor04_C37\simulink

The ss_c37 subsystem contains a "Time_domain_waveform_generation" that takes a single phase phasor (balanced system) and produces 3-phase sinusoidal time varying signals (Figure1):

Figure 1 Simulink conversion of single phase phasor to three phase (balanced) sinusoidal time varying waveforms.

Once these 3-phase sinosoidal time varying signals are generated, they can be communicated through Analog outputs to an external controller or device. In this model external connection is meant to be done with a real three-pase relay, for protection coordination studies. In this case we are performing HIL with protection relays.
