The Company
Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) is building SmarTS-Lab (Smart Transmission Systems Laboratory), a research and education platform based on OPAL-RT’s real-time simulation technology. The laboratory enables researchers and students to evaluate smart grid concepts, control strategies, protection systems, and communication technologies in a controlled, highly detailed, and reproducible environment.
OPAL-RT’s simulator technology allows us to develop a collaborative R&D platform for use by different research divisions. From the start, the flexibility and openness of the eMEGAsim simulator allows the EPS and ICS divisions to conduct joint research on Smart Grids. This common platform will allow us to bring different research aspects together and evaluate them as a whole.

The Challenges
- Multi-Disciplinary Smart Grid Research: KTH required a platform capable of supporting both research and education activities related to smart grids, HVAC networks, and HVDC power systems.
- Large-Scale Real-Time Simulation: Researchers needed detailed simulation of large AC and DC grids, including electromagnetic transients and power system devices operating at different time scales.
- Communication and HIL Testing: The platform needed fast I/O interfaces, closed-loop testing with real protection and control equipment, IEC 61850 communication support, and access from multiple workstations.
The OPAL-RT Solution
- High-Performance Simulation Platform: KTH deployed two real-time supercomputers with a combined total of 24 CPU cores connected through a high-speed link for scalable real-time simulation.
- Advanced Hardware & Communications: The platform includes more than 350 fast I/O channels, a 250 V high-voltage interface, IEC 61850 communication support, GOOSE and Sampled Value messaging, and FPGA coprocessors for ultrafast simulation.
- Open Research Environment: RT-LAB provides integration with MATLAB/Simulink, SimPowerSystems, LabVIEW, OPC, openPDC, and other third-party tools while supporting floating licenses across multiple workstations.
The Results
- Accelerated Research: The eMEGAsim simulator enabled broad research activities, accelerated development, and supported customization and integration with third-party software and hardware.
- Reduced Prototype Dependence: Digital real-time simulation enabled researchers to avoid costly and time-consuming physical test stands and hardware prototypes.
- Integrated Research & Education: SmarTS-Lab created a collaborative environment that supports both advanced research and classroom learning.
- Enhanced Engineering Training: The platform helps prepare students with analytical, design, and implementation skills relevant to future smart grid technologies.
