Collaborative Workshop
Join us for a collaborative workshop with Hydro-Québec (Stéphan Strasbourg) and CIMA+ (David Auger) for a practical exploration of the IEC 61850 standard. This 90-minute session covers both strategic foundations and real-world deployment insights, featuring a live demonstration of system interoperability.
Participants gain valuable benefits through expert perspectives, hands-on examples and a deeper understanding of how IEC 61850 supports modern, reliable and seamlessly integrated substations.

Electrical Modeling & Simulation Analyst
Mehrdad Kazemtabrizi
Mehrdad Kazemtabrizi specializes in large-scale EMT simulations and HIL testing for intelligent power systems (including IEC 61850).
He will introduce the IEC 61850 standard through its technical context, the key challenges it addresses, and its underlying fundamental concepts before exploring how the standard is applied in modern digital substations, setting the foundation for the rest of the workshop.

Vice President – Engineering & Electrical Expertise
Jean-Nicolas Paquin
Jean-Nicolas Paquin supervises OPAL-RT’s R&D collaborations across North America and directs the development of the company’s power system test benches. His expertise covers modeling, simulation, and HIL testing for power systems.
He will conclude the workshop by summarizing the key points covered, guiding a brief discussion on current challenges and potential solutions, and outlining the next steps for advancing IEC 61850 initiatives.
