Our real-time simulation tools support the development and integration of renewable energy into power systems, allowing engineers to test and optimize performance safely and efficiently. They also advance electric vehicle testing through hardware-in-the-loop simulation, helping accelerate cleaner transportation solutions. By leveraging digital twins, organizations can optimize energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and make smarter, more sustainable decisions across a wide range of applications.

OPAL-DDD community engagement and educational support

OPAL-DDD proudly supports and amplifies initiatives that foster deep, lasting ties between businesses and their communities. In October 2024, OPAL-DDD influenced OPAL-RT to launch a corporate volunteering program, allowing each employee to dedicate up to one full day of paid time to support local non-profit organizations. By engaging in food drives, educational workshops, and environmental activities, employees become active participants in building a more resilient and inclusive society.

Through strategic collaborations, like the employment fair supporting access to local job opportunities, collective food drives with Share The Warmth – Partageons l’Espoir, STEM workshops for girls with Les Scientifines, entertainment for elderly with Centre Communautaire Saint-Antoine 50+, teaching arts and science to student at risk of dropping out with l’Ancre des jeunes, or encouraging donations to charitable organizations in its neighborhood.

OPAL-DDD environmental projects

OPAL-DDD also supports environmental initiatives and is collaborating with Concordia University on two projects:

Developing a structured knowledge base and a techno-environmental assessment framework, including software-based evaluation tools, to analyze rehabilitation strategies for exposed-concrete building façades constructed between 1950 and 1980, within Québec’s specific climatic context.
Designing a reference model to reduce energy costs in heritage buildings through intelligent energy management that integrates renewable energy and emergency systems. This project aims to protect vulnerable populations during power outages and supports both the charitable organization Share the Warmth – Partageons l’Espoir and homes belonging to an Indigenous community in northern Québec.

OPAL-DDD creates bridges between corporate actors and community-based organizations. These initiatives not only address urgent social challenges such as food security, educational equity, and sustainability, but also cultivate a shared sense of purpose and responsibility across sectors.

Reducing our footprint through everyday action

Sustainable operations and practices

At OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES, sustainable development is more than just a vision, it’s a set of concrete actions embedded in our daily operations. Our teams are actively engaged in reducing our environmental footprint and promoting responsible resource management. By encouraging employee participation in eco-conscious actions, from waste sorting and electronic recycling to sustainable commuting and green office habits, we help embed environmental responsibility into our workplace culture. Here’s an overview of the internal initiatives we’ve implemented:

Energy efficiency

We replaced traditional lighting with low-consumption LED bulbs and regulated room temperatures to reduce energy usage. More efficient air conditioning systems were also installed to further minimize our energy consumption.

Waste reduction

We revamped our waste bins and added clear signage to encourage better sorting. Compostable utensils were introduced in our shared spaces to cut down on plastic waste.

Electronic waste recovery

In partnership with Recyborg, we sort and recycle our electronic waste on a regular basis, obsolete equipment, electronic cards and numerous mechanical parts. This partnership helps divert e-waste from landfills and promotes reuse.

Reducing harmful packaging

We’ve significantly reduced our use of bubble wrap by reusing folded cardboard boxes for incoming and outgoing shipments, an initiative documented by our team.

Innovation through electrification

We are adapting our overall energy consumption, reflecting our ongoing commitment to sustainability innovation.

Switch to rechargeable batteries

We’ve eliminated the use of 1,500 disposable batteries per year by switching to rechargeable alternatives across our operations.

Supporting sustainable energy and responsible practices

OPAL-RT enables the efficient integration and testing of IEC 61850-based smart grid automation, helping accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and reduce grid inefficiencies.

We also promote ethical sourcing and responsible supply chains by supporting conflict-free mineral sourcing and conducting annual audits of key suppliers, contributing to sustainable development and the protection of human rights.
