| Exponential development in technology forces electricity to be supplied in higher amounts and increased quality. Consequently, power grid operation aims both utilization of existing system infrastructure and marginal benefit from grid investments while satisfying certain degree of quality with a continuous service. This will force grids to operate closer to their loadability limits. An important example is observed in the northeastern part of the Turkish grid. Due to the water regime in the spring season, northeastern part of the grid, where transmission investment is challenging due to the geographical structure, operates closer to the security limits. Neither forcing grid beyond security limit nor the water spillage are desired options. In such a case, Turkey preferred to install a special protection scheme to the region in order to coordinate the outages around the region; hence, reducing the risk of regional brownout. To ensure the reliability of designed special protection system several tests should be conducted before installation for different system operation scenarios. Testing on site is neither practical nor safe way to examine stability, accuracy and dependability of these systems. Besides, that may endanger system operation. Hence, in our study the prepared SPS is tested using hardware in the loop (HIL) method by utilizing a digital twin for the grid. For this purpose, first the modelling and verification studies of the grid are conducted on RT-LAB platform. Later the HIL tests are conducted for the developed WAMS based special protection scheme before installing the SPS to the grid. |
