RT20 | Voltage Source Converter Models for Real-Time Simulation and HIL Testing of Microgrids

As voltage source converters (VSCs) are increasingly used in many areas, electrical systems now contain more power converters with higher switching frequencies than ever before. This brings additional challenges to system modeling and simulation, especially for real-time and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests. Efforts on the matrix pre-calculation method, system decoupling methods, and converter modeling methods presented throughout the literature are addressing the challenges, but with certain limitations. This presentation explains a general interpolated VSC model that works for various VSC topologies, and that integrates the interpolation technique for high-switching frequencies, allowing system decoupling to overcome the switch number limit. The model is validated through two test systems with both open- and closed-loop controls. Results show the model has both a fast simulation speed and an equal or better accuracy at a 50 µs time step, compared with the reference model at a 1 µs time step, and that therefore, this methodology is suitable for real-time simulation and HIL tests
