RT20 | Hybrid RCP and PHIL Setup for Parallel Converters for Analysis and Damping of Subsynchronous Oscillations
Video
2020-06-18

| Parallel grid-forming converters are the backbone of future power systems but may be prone to instability caused by subsynchronous oscillations. The literature suggests several damping algorithms to mitigate these oscillations. However, testing and validating the general damping performance is difficult in the original system. Hence, we propose a scaled test bench with efficient controller implementation and a flexible grid model through a Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) setup to emulate various subsynchronous oscillations and their damping. This test bench contains three Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) prototypes controlled by an Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) system that are connected to a power amplifier controlled by OPAL-RT. The OPAL-RT provides real-time simulation of either a simplified grid model or a grid segment comprised of loads grid-forming units for the physical VSGs to interact with. Finally, a Power System Stabilizer for the VSG control is presented that efficiently damps oscillations in a wide operating range. |
