RT20 | Implementation of a Real-Time Digital Simulation Platform to Train Operators in Phasor Domain (Dynamic Simulator)

The Ecuadorian power grid is growing too fast, and the digital technology which has been adopted for Power System modernization bring new challenges to energy companies and control rooms (CENACE and COT). In this context, Smart Transmission Grid (STG) in the Smart Control Rooms provides an ideal Training Environment that improves realism, supporting operators to become familiar to the new technology.
CENACE and COT do not have such environments to support operators and there is no possibility for them to be familiarized with the dynamics of the phenomena that occurs in the real power system. Therefore, operators do not respond adequately to possible dynamic changes of the network.
The present work proposes a methodology for the implementation of a Real-Time Digital Simulation Platform to train Operators in Phasor Domain (Dynamic Simulator). The tool will provide knowledge on electromechanical oscillations at Ecuadorian Network with and Monitoring Systems (WAMS).
First, a reduced network is modeled for Real-Time execution using ePHASORsim. This model uses dynamic components developed in OpenModelica such as generators, excitation system, power system stabilizer, and governors. Additionally, the static components of Ecuadorian network are modeled in PowerFactory DIgSILENT. FMU format was used to export dynamic components from OpenModelica, and DGS format was used to export static components from Power Factory DIgSILENT to ePHASORsim.
Furthermore, the Real Time Digital Simulator – WAProtector integration is developed through virtual PMUs and communication protocols to enable the Dynamic Simulator. Dynamic Simulator allows operator to interpret the results of WAProtector’s applications like Angular Difference, Oscillatory Stability, Voltage Stability of Transmission Corridors, and Frequency Monitoring. Finally, the Dynamic Simulator results are compared with PowerFactory DIgSILENT.
