RT20 | Innovative SCADA Cybersecurity Training Using Network Digital Twins

| Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are the new soft target for cyber criminals, making the need to understand the impact and train for a cyber attack essential. As this threat continues to grow, Security Operating Centers must train their operators on managing these critical SCADA environments. SCALABLE has developed EXata for Cyber-Physical Systems (EXata CPS) to support the creation of network digital twins to improve the efficiency of their infrastructure systems, while at the same time advancing the reliability of their grid. EXata CPS integrates with OPAL-RT’s power simulators to allow synchronized emulation of communication systems and power grid components. Our latest innovation in supporting the protection of CPSs introduces our Network Defense Trainer (NDT). NDT leverages EXata CPS network modeling capabilities and provides additional capabilities to identify and log human actions, correlating those actions with cyber-attack progression, network performance, and cyber-physical system behavior. NDT includes reconfigurable role player stations which are instrumented for human responses, and which could be used to run control center HMI screens as well as cyber situational awareness and defense tools. |
