DC Grid Benchmark models: Systems with high integration of Renewables Generation

DC Grid concept has been evaluated for future applications in CIGRE since 2013. Studies are carried out using electromagnetic transient (EMT) models developed for voltage source converters (VSCs), direct current (DC) breakers, and renewable generation. Recognizing the interest of the subject, seven benchmark systems (BMs) were created and modelled by CIGRE Working Group B4.72 and documented in the corresponding CIGRE Technical Brochure (TB-804). This paper discusses Benchmark Model 1 (BM1) that includes renewable sources and conventional generation, a five-terminal meshed 500 kV DC grid, and two AC systems. In this paper, power flow and electromagnetic/electromechanical transients of BM1 are investigated and reported.
