RT21 | Application of a Real-time Simulator for Microgrid Studies

Microgrid systems are gaining popularity worldwide due to high reliability, power quality, grid- independency and economic benefits. Applications of the power electronics devices (i.e. converters and inverters for integration of renewable power generators with hybrid energy storages in microgrid) require a complex coordinated control system. Real-time simulators can provide a useful platform to academic researchers and industry experts for detailed analysis of control systems and its validation in microgrid. This presentation explores the application of a real-time simulator for microgrid studies. Dr. Kumar will talk about the basic background of the real-time simulation and different operating configuration for microgrid studies. Then, he will discuss a methodology on the implementation of a microgrid control system using a real time simulator. A brief discussion on the challenges and opportunities involved with real time simulation of microgrids will be also presented.
