RT21 | Synchronous Generator and Excitation System Response to GIC

Most research on Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) has focused on the response of transformers with very few studies on generator excitation systems. A GIC is driven by an electric field, induced by multi-frequency time-varying geomagnetic fields. To understand the true dynamic response of power systems to GICs, there is a need to relax the conventional dc assumptions in modelling GICs and use realistic GIC profiles. Considering this, a multi-machine power system model was modelled in MATLAB Simulink and simulated in real-time using OPAL-RT, providing insightful results on the role of excitation control in the mitigating some of the effects of GICs in power systems.
