Webinar | Why Utility Planning and Operational Groups are Adopting Fast EMT Simulation | OPAL-RT Learning Journey

Author : Jean Bélanger, Jaime Peralta, Jean Mahseredjian, and Henry Gras

Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) models of grids are necessary to perform integration studies of large power electronics systems such as utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTs), and others. Traditionally, models of grids available to utilities have been transient stability (TS) models. Thus, it becomes important to identify methods of developing high-fidelity EMT models for portions of the grid. At the same time, simulating entire grids in EMT is very heavy on computing resources, and one minute’s worth of results could conceivably take hours of simulation if the right simulator architecture is not used. In this learning journey, Jean Bélanger, CEO and CTO of OPAL-RT, presents new technologies that hold great promise in the direction of overcoming the future simulation challenges of utilities. Our special guests from EMTP® will present the accurate off-line simulations with EMTP®, automatic initialization from load-flow solution with renewables, time-domain vs phasor-domain and simulation of very large grids with renewables. And Jaime Peralta discusses the importance of EMT simulation to ensure the Chilean electric network performance, security and reliability.
