RT22 | Software-in-the-Loop for Online Dynamic Security Assessment of the Power System

Today's power system operating environment is becoming increasingly complex. The introduction of new technologies and the high penetration of non-conventional renewable energies make the analysis of the dynamic security of the system more important. In recent years, the research and advancement of technological tools have made it possible to implement the concept of digital twins for the application of real-time analytical techniques needed to quantify the dynamic safety limits of the system to provide the power system operator with early warnings to make decisions to improve the safety and reliability. On-line dynamic security assessment (DSA) is an evaluation of the power system's ability to withstand a set of defined contingencies and reach a new acceptable steady state, this computational analysis can be performed in real time using a high performance computational infrastructure that consists of implementing a distributed or parallel processing, in this analysis has been considered aspects of voltage stability (VSA) and transient stability (TSA) for the current operating point of the system. The present work focuses on implementing an online DSA analysis tool applied to the National Interconnected System of Ecuador-S.N.I. using a real-time digital simulator OPAL-RT as a high-performance computational tool. To achieve this objective, a methodology has been implemented to acquire real-time data from the SCADA/EMS of CENACE to a reduced model of the S.N.I. developed within the digital simulator of power systems HYPERSIM using the communication module through DNP 3.0 protocol. With the results of the simulation in the time domain, performance indicators have been developed with mathematical techniques that allow evaluating the voltage stability and transient stability for a set of defined contingencies, the computation of these indexes will allow determining the level of dynamic security of the S.N.I. for the current operating condition. This was done by sending the results from HYPERSIM by C37.118 protocol to a communications module developed in MATLAB which will also calculate the stability indexes in real time, making this implementation a closed loop between the OPAL RT digital simulator, SCADA/EMS and MATLAB
