Developing even moderate-sized models for real-time modeling can be challenging to those new to OPAL-RT. Models running offline does not guarantee that they are immediately compatible with the formatting requirements of the OPAL-RT real-time environment. Particularly, the debugging process can challenging in formatting a model to run on OPAL-RT for those unfamiliar with the process. A tool which automates the development process has been developed for electrical networks. This tool is called SwAGSM (Software for Automatic Generation of Simulink Models). The user only needs minimal knowledge of how to use MATLAB scripts and an intermediate knowledge of how to manipulate Excel Spreadsheet to generate a Simulink model that is immediately compatible with OPAL-RT. The model development and debugging processes are completely removed from the process of generating real-time models to run on OPAL-RT. SwAGSM requires the user to first edit an save intuitively structure Excel file. Then the user simply runs MATLAB script which automatically generates the Simulink model for the system with all necessary OPAL-RT components already in place. The generated model is immediately loadable to OPAL-RT requiring only a single settings adjustment in RT-LAB and selecting ‘XHP’ mode if the step size is less than 50 microseconds. Overall, SwAGSM tool streamlines the process of modeling 3-phase AC systems with converters and DC components present. Additional features will be added as development of the tool progresses.
