RT23 |Coordination of Congestion Management between Transmission and Distribution Networks

The escalating demand for electricity, integration of renewable energy sources, and limited expansion of power grids have led to congestion issues. Congestion management is essential to uphold grid stability while simultaneously reducing costs. In this study, we aim to address congestion in the transmission network by strategically redistributing generation within the distribution network. An intriguing aspect of this research lies in its consideration of small signal stability within power generation distribution. The integration of multiple converters within the distribution network introduces dynamic interactions that can affect the overall system stability. By integrating small signal stability analysis, our study ensures that distributed power generation maintains grid stability and reliability. The simulation of transmission and distribution network models will be conducted using separate real-time simulators. Congestion problems within the transmission network will be detected by the transmission system operator (TSO). Subsequently, the TSO will perform redispatch calculations and apply optimization techniques to determine optimal power generation set points in the distribution network. To facilitate seamless coordination, we employ the IEC 60870-5-104 communication protocol for efficient data exchange between the TSO and distribution network converters. The outcomes of our study will significantly enhance power system management strategies. By leveraging real-time simulators and implementing sophisticated communication protocols, we'll achieve a coordinated approach to congestion mitigation and power generation redispatch.
