RT23 | Frequency-Watt Algorithm employment for grid-connected microgrid using PHIL simulations

Power Hardware In-the-Loop (PHIL) simulation is a widely known method for testing power system technologies. Due to its complexity, the power system presents significant challenges when it comes to the adoption of new controllers and management systems. As a result, PHIL simulation enables the testing and validation of the developed technology and energy management systems with high-fidelity results prior to their application to the actual power system. Consequently, this paper outlines the testing and application of a Frequency-Watt algorithm in the case of a grid-connected microgrid at Morocco's first PHIL laboratory. In terms of laboratory equipment, the microgrid is formed by connecting PV, Line impedance, Load, and Energy Storage system emulators to an OPAL-RT Real-Time Simulator. The Energy Storage systemis used as a power balancing reference for frequency stabilization. The PHIL testing results show the effectiveness of the frequencywatt control in maintaining the microgrid’s frequency within acceptable limits. Thus, when frequency disturbances occur due to the load variation, the algorithm generates a reference power for the energy storage system to be consumed or injected, in order to stabilize the frequency.
