RT23 | OPTILE: A collaborative project for the optimisation and simulation of isolated electrical

France Energies Marines (FEM) is a French institute for the energy transition that supports the development of the offshore renewable energy (ORE) sector by addressing technological and environmental challenges through collaborative research projects. One of these projects is OPTILE (OPTimisation multicriteria for an isolated microgrid powered by renewable marine energy sources), which aims to propose economic and environmental solutions for the supply of isolated electrical grids, such as islands, aquaculture farms, or oil and gas infrastructures, using ORE sources and hydrogen storage. The project involves 10 partners from industry and academia, and has a total budget of €1.5M and a duration of 3 years (2022-2025). The project will develop and implement a multifactor joint optimisation method that takes into account various criteria, such as reliability, machine position, electrical grid, carbon dioxide estimation, consumption control, cybersecurity and electrical stability. The project will also perform real-time simulation of an electrical network taking into account cyber security aspects. The project will apply its method and tools to different case studies, such as an island, an aquaculture farm, and an oil and gas infrastructure. The project will also share its progress and results with island grid systems operators through public webinars. The expected outcomes of the project are to provide low-carbon, low-cost and reliable energy solutions for isolated grids, and to contribute to the decarbonisation of the energy balance initiated by the French State. One of the tools that the project will use for its simulation and testing activities is HYPERSIM. The use of HYPERSIM for the OPTILE project will allow the project partners to benefit from the advantages of EMT simulation. EMT simulation enable the project partners to evaluate the performance of the ORE sources and the hydrogen storage system under different operating conditions and disturbances, and to assess the impact of cyberattacks on the electrical network and the control system. Keywords: France Energies Marines, OPTILE, offshore renewable energy, isolated microgrid, multi-criteria optimisation, hydrogen storage, cyber security, HYPERSIM, EMT simulation, co-simulation.
