University of Vaasa Microgrid | Success Story

The University of Vaasa's Smart Grid Laboratory at FREESI, part of the Vaasa Energy Business Innovation Center (VEBIC), has achieved a significant milestone in fortifying microgrid controllers against cyber threats. Leveraging innovative tools such as HYPERSIM power system simulation platform from OPAL-RT and EXata CPS network simulation platform from Keysight, the groundbreaking security lab in Vaasa, Finland, establishes itself as the first of its kind in Northern Europe. Recognizing the critical vulnerabilities posed by online connectivity in microgrids, especially in managing Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), the team embarked on a rigorous development process utilizing Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platforms. By simulating various cyberattacks and their potential impacts, the team has meticulously analyzed and tested the resilience of critical communication networks. This strategic integration of HYPERSIM and EXata CPS has empowered researchers to visualize specific environments and swiftly evaluate diverse scenarios, thus pioneering enhanced security measures and ensuring the resilience of Smart Grid systems. Through their interdisciplinary expertise and dedication, they have not only advanced the understanding of cyber threats in microgrid operations but also contributed to the safeguarding of future energy systems.
