2024-09-19

This presentation focuses on real-time simulation and its application with the IEC 61850 standard. It begins by exploring the role of IEC 61850 in integrating protection, control, measurement, and monitoring functions across power system networks at the process, bay, and substation levels. The presentation highlights the importance of real-time simulation in studying digital substations to prevent malfunctions after installation. Additionally, it reviews the communication protocols supported by real-time simulators, such as Modbus and IEC 61850, and discusses how relay testing for IEC 61850 can be achieved without the need for expensive power amplifiers. Results from the UFSM Laboratory setup and the outcomes of related R&D projects are also shared, concluding with insights drawn from the study.
