RT24 UK | Power Hardware in The Loop Control for Hybrid Energy Storage Systems
Presentation, Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL), Power Systems
2024-11-29

This presentation explores control strategies for hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), specifically focusing on flywheels and supercapacitors, within the framework of Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) experiments at the Energy Lab, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). HESS, combining different storage technologies, offers an optimal solution to meet modern energy systems' dynamic power demands while enhancing storage devices' efficiency and lifespan. The presentation highlights control methods for effective energy distribution between fast-response storage units, such as supercapacitors and flywheels, and conventional battery systems. Using the PHIL setup, various control algorithms, including fuzzy logic, are evaluated to optimize the performance of HESS. These strategies aim to ensure stability, extend battery life, and improve the overall reliability of energy systems.
