RT24 UK | Design of an Adaptive Digital Twin to Increase Transparency in Power Grids

The challenges for grid operators to ensure reliable grid operation will intensify in the coming years due to factors such as increasing load and feed-in volatility and changing regulatory frameworks like flexible grid charges and dynamic electricity tariffs. Effective and reliable monitoring is essential for network observability and transparency to detect congestion and derive countermeasures. This contribution introduces an adaptive digital twin methodology for electrical energy networks, leveraging hierarchical modeling and real-time simulation using the OPAL-RT Hypersim tool. State estimation and observer approaches determine node-specific characteristics based on load and feed-in data, creating a digital twin to support decision-making and operational management. The presentation highlights the system design, model adaptation results, and integration with real-time EMT simulation.
