RT24 UK | Modeling and Control of Sequence-Decomposed Grid-Forming IBRs with CHIL Validation

This presentation examines the stability challenges that arise when implementing negative-sequence control in grid-forming (GFM) inverter-based resources, as increasingly required by technical standards and grid codes. Using an OPAL-RT controller hardware-in-the-loop test platform, the study analyzes sub-synchronous oscillation issues in sequence-decomposed GFM control systems and presents a robust damping enhancement control solution. Additionally, the presentation addresses the complexities of designing current-limiting strategies that can effectively manage large grid disturbances while maintaining appropriate sequence voltage profiles.
