RT24 UK | Co-simulation Opportunities for Large Area Models with HVDC Replicas

The National HVDC Centre, Great Britain's hub for real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation, is expanding its capabilities to address the growing complexity of the electricity transmission system driven by HVDC projects and renewable energy integration. The Centre uses physical replicas of HVDC control and protection systems interfaced with RTDS environments to model high-power elements and AC network connections, supporting project testing, training, and event investigations. With increasing HVDC installations and the need for comprehensive system assessments, the Centre is enhancing its simulation capabilities through innovative co-simulation approaches using OPAL-RT and RTDS platforms. This presentation will discuss the Centre’s progress in creating a co-simulation environment, addressing challenges such as system boundary definition and detailed modeling, to tackle interaction risks and support GB's transition to Net Zero.
