RT24 UK | Short-Term Control of Heat Pumps Supporting Power Grid Operation in Multi-Energy Systems

The integration of heat pumps into power grids poses challenges such as transformer and cable overloads, requiring a robust control strategy that leverages distributed energy resources (DERs) like photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and thermal energy storage (TES). This presentation explores a Model Predictive Control (MPC) system developed for a Low-Temperature District Heating (LTDH) network, tested in a real-world scenario at the Living Lab Energy Campus (LLEC). It details the MPC algorithm, the Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) co-simulation setup, and key findings, showcasing how the approach effectively reduces heat pump power consumption and mitigates overloading by integrating DERs and optimizing indoor temperature flexibility.
