RT24 India | Importance of WADC on Renewable Rich Power System: A Real-Time Case Study Using OPAL-RT

The rapid and large-scale integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) is transforming modern power systems, but also posing unprecedented challenges to grid stability and reliability. Unlike traditional synchronous generators, RESs such as wind and solar are inherently variable and intermittent, leading to reduced system inertia and heightened vulnerability to Low-Frequency Oscillations (LFOs). Wide Area Damping Controllers (WADCs), integrated by Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS), have become indispensable in safeguarding grid stability under high RES penetration. By harnessing real-time synchronized data from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) distributed across the network, WADCs effectively damp inter-area oscillations and mitigate these concerned modes that jeopardize system stability. The findings emphasize the pivotal role of WADCs in ensuring a robust, resilient, and stable grid capable of meeting the demands of a renewable-driven future.
