RT26 Edinburgh | The Role of PHIL Testing and Validation in Grid Compliance

This presentation examines how Power-Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) testing can accelerate grid compliance and validation as the Power System evolves toward greater integration of renewable energy, power converters, electrolyzers, batteries, and hybrid plants. It highlights the limitations of conventional field testing and shows how a configurable Test Bench can emulate wind, grid, turbine, generator, and plant conditions in repeatable closed-loop environments, reducing cost, energy use, and development time while improving design confidence. Through mechanical and electromagnetic PHIL applications, the approach enables scalable validation of wind turbine and power converter behavior, supports compliance with Transmission grid-code requirements, and helps de-risk the deployment of advanced energy technologies.
