RT26 Edinburgh | Co-simulation with Large Area Models and HVDC Replicas

This presentation explores how large-area Power System models, HVDC control-and-protection replicas, and real-time co-simulation can support safer and more comprehensive testing of modern Transmission networks. Using HYPERSIM on the OP5033XG, the approach models a reduced 12-zone GB AC network and connects it with detailed HVDC converter models and physical replicas across OPAL-RT and RTDS platforms, enabling Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) studies of system integration, commissioning, protection, control upgrades, and AC/DC fault scenarios. By combining detailed local dynamics with practical network reduction and low-latency co-simulation, the architecture also establishes a foundation for future Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) testing of large, interconnected AC and multi-terminal DC systems.
