Panel Session: Grid Interaction Challenges of Data Centers
Speaker: Jean-Nicolas Paquin
Conference Room: Room 516A
Abstract: The rapid growth of data centers driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure is introducing unprecedented challenges to electric grid operations. These facilities present highly concentrated, rapidly varying, and mission-critical loads that can impact grid stability, reliability, and power quality. Understanding their dynamic behavior, including sub-second response characteristics and interaction with transmission and distribution systems, is essential for future grid planning. This session explores modeling and control approaches, classification of flexible and critical loads, and development of standardized power and control interfaces between utilities and data centers. The discussion aims to highlight key research needs, operational challenges, and collaborative strategies to ensure secure, resilient, and efficient integration of large-scale data centers into evolving power systems.
