Understanding the role of hardware-in-the-loop testing in supporting reliable data center interconnections and grid operations

The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence powered applications across various industries has fueled an unprecedented demand to build and power new data centers. System operators across the country are seeing tremendous volume of new data center interconnection applications and are working towards not only drafting appropriate requirements for their interconnection, but also towards adapting their study processes in order to understand how data centers would impact an already evolving bulk power grid. With the breakneck pace of evolutions in data center design, this introduces additional complexities in understanding its various implications for control and protection. Consequently, the importance of having validated, high-fidelity electromagnetic transient simulation-based models for various parts of a data center is critical.
This panel discusses the importance of model validation and the key role that hardware-in-the-loop testing plays to ensure their reliable interconnection and continuous operation. The panel will also touch upon some of the key challenges and opportunities in this space in terms of regulatory or operational drivers that necessitate hardware-in-the-loop testing.
