RT20 | Multi-FPGA Simulation for Modern Power Systems: Hardware in the Loop Testing

With certain electrical system studies and testing applications, FPGA-based simulation must be used in order to meet performance and accuracy objectives. Recent technological advancements impose further major challenges in terms of real-time simulation of power systems, including fast power electronics components in areas such as microgrids, distribution networks, and More Electric Aircraft (MEA) power systems. These challenges include both the efficient distribution of large grids over several FPGA boards and accuracy while simulating fast-switching power converters. This presentation describes the advantages of the Multi-FPGA-based real-time simulation of power systems, explains some of the challenges encountered in real-time simulation, and discusses various methods of addressing these challenges and solving the linked problems that may arise. Two case studies are then presented: I) the real-time simulation of a micro-grid connected to a large distribution network containing 210 bus bars; and ii) a model approximately representing the Boeing 787 More Electric Aircraft, developed using publicly available data.
