RT20 | HIL Simulation for Control Applications

Simulation has been used as an effective tool for validation of control systems since a long time. However, credible simulation of modern sampled-data systems presents a cntrol systems designer with a number of challenges , the first and foremost being the necessity of running the simulation in Real-Time. In addition to this, the need to run the simulation with a small sample time often  becomes a necessity to achieve credible simulation results for drawing inference regarding the performance of the  control system, particularly when  realistic non-linear models of physical systems are used. Realistic simulation of physical systems with small enough sample time allows simulation in almost continuous time and when integrated with actual control hardware operating at a designated sampling interval, this results in  a realistic simulation of a sampled-data control loop, which is common for most pysical systems.

In the Department of Power Engineering at Jadavpur University, a specialized setup has been developed for simulation of Networked Control Systems (NCSs) which has been augmented wihh an Opal -RT setup used for detailed simulation of physical systems like a nuclear reactors . The simulated systems have been interfaced with actual physical controller outputs and the sensor outputs generated by the simulation have been traced on oscilloscopes in Real-Time. The setup has been used extensively for reactor control aplications and a study of control systems designed for an Electric Vehicle. The talk will mainly focus on the simulation results related to these studies.

Of late, Vision guided Control has also emerged as an important area in the domain of control systems, a typical example being autonomous landing of space probes. The Opal- RT setup is also planned to be used for Real-Time simulation of a lunar lander's dynamics and its kinematics in an environment where the  deep-space delay will be simulated with the existing setup for NCS simulation in the lan. The proposed talk will also present a schematic of the Opal-RT based setup planned to be used for this.
