Valeo Uses an OPAL-RT Simulator to Develop Innovative Powertrain Solutions

The Company

Valeo was founded in 1923 in Saint Ouen, France, and is a leading automotive supplier developing technologies for vehicle efficiency and electrification. In this project, Valeo’s Powertrain Systems division focused on developing a new power electronics system for electric vehicle applications.

The Challenges

  • Control Algorithm Development: Engineers needed to study a new electric vehicle power electronics system and develop new control algorithms and control laws.
  • Time-Consuming Prototyping: Traditional development methods required computer code to be written and implemented before testing prototypes, increasing development time and cost.
  • Limited Flexibility: Conventional approaches made it difficult to quickly modify or correct control loops and required specialized programming expertise to investigate issues.

The OPAL-RT Solution

  • Simulink-Integrated RCP Platform: OPAL-RT’s RCP-Drive automatically deploys Simulink models to a real-time platform with project-specific I/O interfaces.
  • Integrated HCI & Datalogging: Built-in HCI and datalogging tools enable faster and more detailed analysis without additional software.
  • Advanced Motor Control Features: Fast PWM management, synchronized PWM/ADC acquisition, and resolver input support enable flexible and accurate motor control testing.

The Results

  • Reduced Development Time: Rapid Control Prototyping enabled earlier corrections and design changes during product development.
  • Tailored Motor Control Development: RCP-Drive provided a rapid control prototyping solution for electric motor control and power conversion applications.
  • Scalable and Flexible Testing: The platform supports complex systems through scalable I/O connectivity, FPGA-based processing, and flexible data acquisition.
  • Open Development Environment: Real-time simulation tools and open architecture enabled model development, visualization, testing, and smooth integration with third-party components.
