Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) Test Bench for Rapid Control Prototyping and Laboratory Research

Research into innovative HVDC interconnections and FACTS applications requires a flexible hardware architecture that allows testing of new topologies and switch configurations.

The OP1200 Modular Multilevel Converter is the ideal test bench dedicated to the verification and prototyping of new control algorithms and for developing future HVDC interconnections.

Focus on What Really Matters

The converter is ready to be connected to the power amplifier or to the electrical network and allows you to concentrate your effort to innovate in power electronics control and algorithms! There is no longer any needs to design your own test bench. Save time and keep the focus on what really matters on your research by using the complete OP1200 turnkey solution.

OP1210 H-Bridge Submodule

The OP1200 solution comes with  submodules of 10 H-Bridge switches that support full and half-arm configurations. By directly wiring cells and submodules together user can form new HVDC and FACTS topologies and benefit from greater flexibility. Submodules are also equipped with a filter interface (common and differential modes), protection (Thyristor) and the possibility to add an additional IGBT switch for AAC topology.

OP4510 Simulator Platform

By interfacing the converter with the OP4510 simulator through its 6 optical link expansion board, user can prototype new control algorithms, drive amplifiers emulating the behavior of a real power system network, send firing command and receive measurement in real-time such as cell DC voltages and half arm currents. The OP4510 is also compatible with RT-LAB, MATLAB, Simulink, HYPERSIM, RTW, and Xilinx System Generator.

Solutions for the Entire Development V-Cycle

OPAL-RT also provides Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) technologies to help engineers develop and test new MMC control algorithms after they are validated through Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) simulation with the OPAL-RT OP1200 test bench.

Modular, Flexible, and Configurable for Your Need

Specify the desired type of converter, the topology, the number of level, the DC Voltage, the frequency and the output power and we will configure the Test Bench. The OPAL-RT 3-Phases Modular Multilevel Converter Test Bench can be configured as scale-down models of:

  • high voltage DC (HVDC) MMC system
  • AAC topology
  • flexible AC transmission system (FACTS)
  • static synchronous compensator (STATCOM)
  • solid state transformer
  • power amplifier

The OP1200 can also be used as a four(4) quadrant amplifiers for PHIL application such as motor emulator and power grid emulator to implement a full micro-grid analog test bench.

Easy-to-Use Courseware

The OP1200 comes with built-in models designed for use in an educational or training course. Using the complete software simulation environment RT-LAB MATLAB/Simulink® and XILINX System Generator, this turnkey test bench is safe, easy-to-use and ideal for teaching and control development of Modular Multilevel Converter systems.
