Complex electrical and electro-mechanical systems are becoming widespread in our environments, and are no longer restricted to large industrial applications such as smart grids, renewables, more electric aircraft, or UAVs. Numerous consumer products—such as electric cars and drones—require increasingly complex control systems to be operated both efficiently and safely. These control systems are extremely specialized, and difficult to design and validate, as their complexity constantly grows in their various architectures, integrating new advanced features, and larger volumes of computer code. Traditional design and validation methods can easily reach their limits, and model-based approaches have developed and become standard in many industries. In this presentation, the theory behind these novel approaches is discussed, and their benefits are highlighted through the illustrative use of example projects.
