HowTo
RT-LAB 11.x+ "localhost" License Activation

RT-LAB 11.x+ "localhost" License Activation

Introduction

The localhost on RT-LAB represents the Windows compiler of the host computer. It is to be used for the purpose of "simulating" real-time. This feature was developed in order to give an alternative to the people who have limited access to an actual target computer like the university students. It permits to build, load and execute models as would be possible on a target computer without the real-time because windows is not a real-time OS.

Follow these three simple steps to activate a localhost license on a Windows computer with RT-LAB 11.x+.

Step Description
Step 1: Setup the localhost "target" link Create a new target link for the localhost
Step 2: Request a localhost License Request a license if you don't already have a license file
Step 3: Install the localhost License Install the localhost license on your host computer

Before activating the localhost, you should verify that your host computer is setup properly according to the following prerequisites:

Prerequisites

A. RT-LAB 11.x+ must be installed on the host computer. see How To Install RT-LAB 11.x+.

B. Ensure that the localhost license feature is included in the quote of your system. If you have any doubts, contact the OPAL-RT salesman responsible for your project number.

Step 1: Setup the localhost "target" link

Due to confusions on RT-LAB 10.5, the localhost feature was hidden in RT-LAB 10.6.x+. Therefore, in order to activate the localhost, you need to activate the localhost target display.

1. On RT-LAB, click on Filter targets as shown in the picture below.

2. Check the option "Show 'localhost' target" and click OK.

3. If you double click on the newly created localhost target to open its properties and click on the Software tab, you should see nothing in the table along with the message "Not available for Windows targets".

Step 2: Request a localhost License

1. Open the localhost (double click [1]), select the "License" tab [2] then click "Request" [3] to open a wizard that will guide you through the license request process.

2. Fill in the license request form

Verify the request information and, then, click "Finish" to complete the process. The request will be sent automatically through a web service on the Internet.

When the Wizard has completed its task, you will receive either a success or an error message:

If your host is not connected to the Internet, the wizard will prompt you to save the request file and send it to our support team (https://www.opal-rt.com/contact-technical-support)

Note that you need a different localhost license for each computer you want to activate.

Step 3: Install the localhost License

1. Before starting, ensure that you have received the required localhost license from our support team. Copy the license file to the host (remember the path on the drive).

2. Install the license: Open the localhost (double click [1]), select the "License" tab [2] and, then, click "Install" [3] to open a file browser.

3. Browse the localhost license file and click "Open". The file will be automatically installed on the host computer.

4. The license view will be updated with the localhost License information.

This view contains the description, license number, expiration date and list of features enabled for the localhost.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE "LOCALHOST" LICENSES IN RT-LAB 11.x+

A. The license file is now a binary file (.bin) instead of a ".lic" file.

B. The license check is made at load only. You can open RT-LAB, edit and compile your models without a license.

C. The localhost license stands only on the host computer activated. RT-LAB 11.x+ can be installed without license on an infinite number of host computers. The localhost (Windows compiler) license file is saved under C:\OPAL-RT\LicServer.

D. The RT-LAB 11.x+ licensing system is totally independent from the license server for RT-LAB 10.4.x and previous versions. Both license systems can reside and function on the same host computer.

E. The RT-LAB 11.x+ licensing system is totally independent from Acresso's FLEXIm software previously used for license management. It is a pure OPAL-RT Technologies solution.
