OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES and Alizem sign a MOU in the field of electric motor edge AI technology

[MONTREAL, April 16th 2018] OPAL-RT TECHNOLOGIES and Alizem are pleased to announce a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aiming to commercialize an edge artificial intelligence technology meant to detect and compensate electric motor faults found in aircrafts, electric vehicles and industrial robots.

“Electric motors are everywhere and their associated sensors are not only helpful in controlling them at desired speed and position but also in closely monitoring their state and detect associated faults.” said Dr. Marc Perron, president at Alizem. “The proposed embedded software algorithms goes one step further in being able to compensate those faults in real-time and have the electric motor to generate near-normal torque in the presence of inverter or electric motor phase faults. It is achieved by continuously comparing a data-constructed model of the electric motor with the model of a normal electric motor and by compensating the gap with the appropriate voltage commands. In the real world, those algorithms can dramatically help in critical safety situations like having a bus stuck on a railroad crossing and still being able to move a few meters ahead and get in a safe situation, hence changing the impact of a fault from catastrophic to manageable”.

“We have recently tested Alizem technology in our labs and within a few weeks of integration we have been able to achieve very satisfying results”, said Jean Bélanger, CEO at OPAL-RT. “In all applications, the design of electric motor drive systems is a very complex process and one can greatly simplify this task by using OPAL-RT simulation systems and quickly converge to a design that meets dynamic and energy-efficiency requirements. Today, one can go a step further in designing intelligent electric motor systems that are robust to faults without having to reinvent the wheel and quickly leverage years of R&D efforts by using Alizem technology. In a context where talent is rare-to-find, this IP-reuse approach is a great way to innovate while saving costs, risks and time-to-market”.
