HowTo
MUSE: How to Upgrade an Existing Simulator with Expansion Units in Order to Interconnect Simulators via SFP Fiber Optic Connection Instead of PCIe Connection

Interconnection between a simulator and expansion units is now possible via SFP cables instead of PCIe cables. This connection is called MUSE (OPAL-RT Multi-System Expansion). More information about MUSE can be found here.

To use MUSE, the essentials are to have the right Hardware, the right firmware (USER bitstream), up-to-date software and up-to-date SAFE bitstream. SFP transceivers with fiber optic cables or also obviously required.

Here is more precision on the requirements to use MUSE:

1) Hardware:

2) Software:

RT-LAB 11.3.5.119 or higher OR HYPERSIM 6.2.2 or higher

Note that an adapted license for the software on the Central system is required.

3) USER bitstream: These bitstream are usually generated by OPAL-RT as part of the Order. It can also be generated by a user using VIVADO along with OPAL-RT toolbox RT-XSG. To get the RT-XSG toolbox and license, contact your OPAL-RT Account Manager. Note that RT-XSG v3.2.3.354 or higher must be used.

4) SAFE bitstream: The SAFE bitstream is programmed on the FPGA prior to delivery and does not usually need to be reprogrammed by the user. That being said, systems shipped prior to 2019 do not have a MUSE compatible SAFE bitstream and must be upgraded in order to use this feature.

For OP5607/OP5700, the SAFE bitstream must be 0018 or higher:

VC707-EM-0000-SAFE-FFFF-0018.bin

VC707-EM-0000-SAFE-FFFF-0018.bit

For OP4520/OP4510, the SAFE bitstream must be 0016 or higher:

TE0741_3-EOM-0000-SAFE-FFFF-0016.bin
TE0741_3-EOM-0000-SAFE-FFFF-0016.bit

Here is how to upgrade the SAFE bitstream:
